Bontoc & Mountain Province Philippines

Bayyo Rice Terraces and Mountain ProvinceBontoc is the provincial capital of the Mountain Province which is located in the northern part of the Luzon Island. The province being land-locked is surrounded by scenic mountains and abundance of greenery. The town can be accessible by riding a jeepney or bus ride. It is two and a half hours away from Banaue. The town may be just a mere stop-over of trips that are passing by from Baguio or Sagada

One main attraction found in Bontoc is the Maligcong Rice Terraces, you can either trek or ride a jeepney going to the viewing point. The rice-fields have stone walls and a narrow footpath that allows you to easily walk through the rice-fields.

The Bay-yo Rice Terraces (pictured here) is another terrace destination that is found in the Mountain Province. The indigenous tribes that are still living there cultivates vegetables like potatoes and cabbages. This beautiful square patchwork will surely take your breath away. After the view of the terraces you will also pass by Mount Polis which will likely be obscured by fog.

Visiting the Bontoc Museum will give you great insight to the rich culture and highly interesting history of the Bontoc people. The Bontoc tribe was known for their head hunting skills during the earlier years, though it is not practiced anymore, the museum shows the tools and weapons that were used to complete this tradition. The museum also has an outdoor display of a life-size house that was traditional during the earlier times.
